The prestigious Schulich Scholarships are awarded to outstanding students in the faculties of Engineering and Natural Sciences, in the first year of their studies and until completion of the degree. The recipients are selected on the basis of academic excellence, social leadership and financial need.

BGU President Prof. Rivka Carmi emphasized the importance of Schulich Scholarships for outstanding students to promote science and technology and the significant role of the Seymour Schulich in the process. "If there is a philanthropist in the world with tremendous vision and social involvement in the community - this is without a doubt Seymour Schulich. Dear Seymour is a real partner in our efforts to change the Negev and the world," she said. โ€œStrengthening science and technology, by granting Schulich scholarships to our talented students is a goal of utmost importance to the University, so the program fits us like a glove. The network of Schulich leaders grows larger every year and changes the social fabric of the State of Israel. Go forth and succeed!" Prof. Carmi also mentioned the almost equal division between the genders in the Schulich Scholarships. "It is important and necessary, because women have a unique contribution and we need as many women as possible in technology and science."

Rubik Danilovich, Mayor of Beersheva, also spoke at the event and requested from the Schulich recipients to seize the huge opportunity given to them to excel and lead. "Be those who will take responsibility for our country. Change the world - it is in your hands!" he said.

The event provided an excellent opportunity for the Schulich fellows to get to know each other and to get to know personally the man behind the program, David Goodman, who came especially from Toronto for the occasion. "The Israelis are very determined to succeed," said Goodman. "That's exciting! I was very impressed with Ben-Gurion University and the dynamic spirit on campus. I'm looking forward to years of fruitful cooperation."
