  Horizon 2020 Prizes

Horizon Prizes are 'challenge' prizes (also known as ‘inducement’ prizes) offering a cash reward to whomever can most effectively meet a defined challenge.
The aim is to stimulate innovation and produce solutions to problems that matter.

This is how the Horizon Prizes work:
  1. first a technological or societal challenge, for which no solution has been found, is defined;
  2. an award is promised for the delivered breakthrough solution;
  3. the award criteria give information about what the solution must be capable of proving;
  4. the means to reach the solution are not prescribed, leaving contestants total freedom to come up with the most promising and effective solution.
Prizes Currently open for submission:
  • Birth day prize - The challenge of the prize is to identify and bring to market innovative solutions preventing death and complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Engine retrofit for clean air - The prize aims at spurring the development of new technologies that can be applied to existing diesel engines and powertrains to reduce emissions of pollutants in real driving conditions to the lowest level possible, in order to improve air quality issues
  • Zero power water monitoring - The Zero Power Water Monitoring Horizon Prize is challenging innovators to come up with solutions based on self-powered and wireless smart sensing technologies designed for real-time monitoring of water resources.
