BGU's Dr. Michael Brandenbursky (pictured below)  has been awarded a highly competitive Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers. The Department of Mathematics senior lecturer will conduct research with a German colleague, Prof. Dr. Stefan Friedl, in Germany over the next 18 months.

Dr. Michael Brandenbursky

The Humboldt Research Fellowship evaluates potential candidates along four axes: academic record and academic performance to date, quality of key publications, originality and innovation potential of the suggested research outline, and the applicant's future potential. Humboldt Fellowships invest in individuals of great promise and there are no country or project quotas.

Brandenbursky's proposal dealt with new understandings in the field of geometry. Specifically, he proposed to connect two seemingly unrelated notions: one stemming from algebra and the other stemming from dynamics. He recommended using this relationship in order to try to solve an old standing question in dynamical systems posed by Anatole Katok.

Brandenbursky is the first member of BGU's Department of Mathematics to receive a Humboldt Research Fellowship.
