Horizon 2020 Spotlight

Ethics and Data Protection in Horizon 2020
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

Personal data provide great opportunities for European research and innovation. At the same time, there are considerable privacy risks. It is thus crucial to comply with ethical and legal standards.

The protection of personal information is a fundamental human right. On May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force and aims at harmonizing data privacy laws across Europe.
Against this background, Horizon 2020 projects are often confronted with legal and ethical challenges. For example: How should personal information be transferred to non-EU countries? Should data be deleted when a research project has come to its end, or stored so that other researchers can verify the results? How should the principle of informed consent be dealt with when it comes to publicly available information on the internet? And what should be done when children and other vulnerable groups are involved?

BGU has recently hired a Data Protection Officer (DPO). In the case where a Data Protection Plan is required, please contact the RDA office.

BGU PIs who have ethical issues related to data protection must be aware of the guide below.
