All research proposals must be reviewed and approved by the RDA before submission.

NSF-BSF Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS) Program

The NSF-BSF Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS) program supports research aimed at understanding why organisms are structured the way they are and function the way they do. Proposals should focus on organisms as a fundamental unit of biological organization. Principal Investigators (PIs) are encouraged to apply systems approaches that will lead to conceptual and theoretical insights and predictions about emergent organismal properties. Areas of inquiry include, but are not limited to, developmental biology and the evolution of developmental processes, nervous system development, structure, and function, physiological processes, functional morphology, symbioses, interactions of organisms with biotic and abiotic environments, and animal behavior.

Proposals are welcome in all areas of science supported by:
For the specific Call Text and Program Areas under this topic please see Call for Proposals NSF-BSF Program IOS.

This program has no deadline and is open for submission throughout the year.

Please note that due to the cancellation of the NSF Biology deadline for proposal submissions, and the possibility of submission throughout the year, the number of American submissions and joint proposals with Israel has been drastically reduced. Since the amount allocated to the various programs has not decreased, this should increase the chances of success. We therefore highly recommend submitting to the NSF-BSF Biology programs as soon as possible.
