Dear BGU Community,
As April comes, so do three important events central to the lives of the communities that make up the special mosaic of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev: the month of Ramadan, Passover, and Easter. Holidays in my experience are a wonderful respite to
refuel with family and friends, and for introspection .
In my over three years as President, the university has experienced ups and downs in sync with external events which influence us all, from the lockdowns and isolation of the holidays two years ago, to the shocking terrorism rearing its head over the
past week. All our hearts go out to the families of the murdered and injured. Our experience teaches us that we will overcome this period and daily life continues. This is our strength.
I would like to take this opportunity to emphasize the values of freedom and tolerance that guide us in creating our BGU community. Our position here in the Negev offers us a unique perspective that allows us, perhaps even behooves us, to work together
to create connections to fulfill our common mission, to create an environment which develops and promotes changing perceptions and impactful knowledge, encourages realizing aspirations and choices, and most importantly, and develops a space that allows
each and every one of us to live and act according to our beliefs.
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is a place where coexistence and partnership based on mutual respect exist daily, and we must not succumb to external pressures which seek to divide us. We recognize that diversity produces openness of thought and excellence,
which are a precondition for any progress. In this we take great pride.
The University's success in building a shared life on campus is proof that we espouse these values, and we resolutely maintain this unique fabric of life.
Our doors are always open to listen to any concerns you may have. Anyone who feels that their freedoms have been violated can always contact the Dean of Students or the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion.
Just before the holiday of freedom is celebrated, it is important that we remember the importance of an environment that encourages personal freedom and the possibility for each of us to follow their beliefs. In the spirit of the coming month of Ramadan,
it is essential that we continue to uphold the values of community, inner peace, giving, and the power of together.
May this period before us be one of peace, brotherhood, partnership, growth, and renewal.
Sincerely yours, |
